This article highlights the types and shapes of load cells used in a variety of applications.
Types of load cell
- Piezoelectric load cell
In this, the deformation is somewhat similar to strain gauge load cell discussed below. But this load cell generates voltage according to the altering form of the load cell. The voltage doesn’t measure as a static value, but is essential when the strain changes. With the charge amplifier conditioning, the piezoelectric load cell measures wide ranges like a boss.
- Strain gauge load cells
They are the most commonly used load cells in the industrial sector. This is because it is known for its durability, stiffness and resonance qualities. The strain gauge load cell is a planar resistor that tends to deform when activities related to load cell material are conducted. The electrical resistance of strain gauge alters in form at levels that is in the correlation to the strain.
- Pneumatic load cells
This helps in controlling the balance of pressure. One side is exposed to air pressure that flows via the under nozzle of the load cell. An attached gauge determines the amount of pressure in the load cell.
Shapes of load cells
- Thru hole load cells
These are also referred to as donut load cells because of their shape. They are ideal choice for applications that entail the use of clamp force or use the measurement of bolt force. These donut load cells are meant for high stiffness and provide total accuracy when it comes to press load and off center applications.
- Canister load cells
They are known by this name because of their canister like shape. These cells have been in use since the inception of strain gauge load cells. Contemporarily, canister load cells are commonly used for compression applications that have a capacity requirement of 100,000 pounds of more.
- Button load cells
These load cells also got their name from their elevated center button. Because of their compact nature, button load cells are ideal for applications in confined and narrow settings. These load cells are famous in medical department where the operating spaces need them. The automation industry also benefits a lot from the small design of the button load cells.
- Pancake load cells
Applications that call for high precision, need the pancake load cell. They are also referred to as low profile load cell. These load cells are available in two designs: bending beams and shear shuts. A majority of pancake load cells showcase a mounting rig and female center thread that is ideal for compression and tension applications.
